What Is Aquaphoni

Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture, which is growing fish and other aquatic animals, and hydroponics which is growing plants without soil. Aquaponics uses these two in a symbiotic combination in which plants are fed the aquatic animals’ discharge or waste. In return, the vegetables clean the water that goes back to the fish. Along with the fish and their waste, microbes play an important role to the nutrition of the plants. These beneficial bacteria gather in the spaces between the roots of the plant and converts the fish waste and the solids into substances the plants can use to grow. The result is a perfect collaboration between aquaculture and gardening.

Benefits Of Aquaphoni

An aquaponics system requires very little maintenance. On the other hand, the electrical conductivity of the water in a hydroponic system will need to be checked on a daily basis. Because of the natural ecosystem of growth that occurs in an aquaponics system, the water chemistry will remain relatively consistent. Aquaponics requires very little water and very little power overall. Because it is a closed system, there is no waste and no water pollution. Crop production is also higher per square foot than traditional farming, which is crucial to growing more food for a larger population.

How Does Aquaphonics work

The waste produced by your fish feeds the plants, and the plants clean the water for the fish, producing one continuous cycle. In aquaponics, you are creating a natural ecosystem where you rely on bacteria and composting red worms to convert the ammonia and solid waste from the fish into a complete plant food. An aquaponics system contains fish in tanks, whose wastewater is pumped to vegetables in grow beds filled with gravel. The roots take up the nitrates and grow like crazy. The water returns to the tank, filtered clean. The organic vegetables and fish provide a complete diet, a good thing for an uncertain world.

Goals Of Aquaponics

The main goal in aquaponic systems is to create plant growth by using aquatic animal waste. Consequently, aquaponics uses the fish waste as a fertilizer for the plants while the plants clean the water for the fish. The plants benefit from the existence of the fish and the other way around
